MANAGING HEARING LOSS IN CHILDREN

This conference will review some critical issues in pediatric audiology.  Acoustic accessibility is critical if a child is going to use hearing to learn language, and to develop literacy skills.  We will review factors critical to identifying acoustic accessibility and discuss using that information to monitor technology to be certain technology is providing sufficient benefit.  We will discuss how to determine how to proceed if technology is not providing sufficient acoustic accessibility.  Factors which affect school performance will be reviewed and the role of audiologists, teachers of the deaf, classroom teachers and families in maximizing performance will be discussed.  Evaluation and management of infants and children with special needs will be reviewed. Product demonstrations of innovative technology for children with hearing loss by Advanced Bionics will be featured. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• Attendees will be able to recognize if a child with hearing loss has sufficient acoustic accessibility to develop spoken language.
• Attendees will identify protocols necessary for determining if technology is providing sufficient benefit.
• Attendees will develop test protocols for evaluation of children with special needs.
  
• Attendees will describe innovative technology for children with hearing loss. 

Conference Speaker will be Dr. Jane Madell, a certified audiologist, speech-language pathologist, and LSLS auditory verbal therapist.  She consults nationally and internationally about hearing in children.  Dr. Madell was formerly the Director of the Hearing and Learning Center and Co-Director of the Cochlear Implant Center at The Ear Institute, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary/Beth Israel Medical Center and Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  Dr. Madell's clinical and research interests have been in the area of evaluation of hearing in infants and young children, management of hearing loss in children, selection and management of technology including hearing aids, cochlear implants and FM systems, assessment of auditory function, and evaluation and management of auditory processing disorders.  Dr. Madell has published 4 books, and numerous book chapters and journal articles.  She is a frequent presenter at professional and parent meetings on topics including auditory development, listening and spoken language, management of children with hearing loss, auditory processing disorders, and family support.

The conference will also include a product demonstration from Advanced Bionics (AB). Dr. Teresa Dozier, an audiologist and representative from AB, will discuss innovative advances in technology for children with cochlear implants. Dr. Dozier leads AB's South East regional team supporting cochlear implant centers and patients.

This course is offered for 6.5 ASHA CEUs. (Intermediate level; Professional area)
